One Last Christmas Read for 2017 & What Are You Reading Wednesday
In true procrastination style, I saved my Christmas read for the last minute... in fact, I didn't officially begin reading it until Christmas morning...
But you know, I'm happy about that...
And after the let down of Mr. Dickens, I'm so excited to finally be digging into this one!
Where This Idea Came From...
The idea is that each week all of us book bloggers can write a post where we talk about the book or books we are reading for the week - and yes if you are still reading the same book for a few weeks in a row that is totally fine. Just be sure to include the answers to the five questions for What are you reading Wednesday in your post. Then hop over to one of the host sites and share your link!Of course, this will be even more fun if you leave the host a comment, and then jump around to another post or two, or five, and gush with them!
We cannot wait to see what you are reading.
What Are You Reading Wednesday - the nitty-gritty
Share the book/s you are reading with their author, maybe even the cover... and then answer these questions for at least one of them.
- Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
- Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
- Will you finish this one?
- Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, TV shows...)
- What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)
Marissa's Current Reads
I've had a busy week... so not much has happened in the actual reading department....
- Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
- The Midnight Star by Marie Lu
- The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso
The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand
On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she'd become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways.
She didn't.
And then she died.
Now she's stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge--as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.
Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly's afterlife has been miserable.
But this year, everything is about to change. . . .
Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
100% content! I'm a huge Dicken's fan, but this modern spin on grabbed my attention as soon as I read the little summary... and Cynthia Hand is part of the trio that wrote My Lady Jane, so I was sure this would be a fun and silly read.
Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
Holly is totally a fun character, and since it's her story, I should say her, but Boz is standing out for some reason to me. The whole mastermind, without a lot of actual "screen" time, is keeping the magic of this story going, and requiring me to stay up way too late twice now!
Will you finish this one?
Oh yes, soon... I laugh at the vernacular, and the feel of the characters, as well as the whole story... it's just fun.
Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, TV shows...)
It's clear that if My Lady Jane was your kind of humor you will enjoy this. If you are a fan of re-imaginings of classics... there are so many nods to Dickens it's funny, while some are obvious, there are many that only a true classic-lit lover will see. But as far as reminding me... well all the strange movie spin-offs of A Christmas Carol... in fact, the book even pokes fun at them...
What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)
It's addictive... it's quick, the action starts right away... but the hook is hiding so I keep turning the page...
