Steampunk in Edinburgh... WAYRW
Are you a historical fiction fan?
I have gone through many phases of my reading life where I am drawn to good historical fiction. But recently, the plots have gotten stale for me. It is predictable, and while I'm often fine with a predictable plot with new characters, I haven't been so generous with my reading time lately.
I want action, adventure... and too often historical adventures are... you guessed it... predictable.
And so enter historical fantasy...
This subgenre takes a historical setting, era, and then adds in a ton of fantasy and magic... The world is what we know, but the adventure surrounds something entirely new.
Steampunk tends to fit perfectly into this subgenre I've noticed. But good steampunk stories, well they are not so easy to come by. So when my book buddy Hannah (she's on Instagram, go follow her! @pagewitch) suggested this book I was all about it.
And in fact I devoured it! But I wrote up my thoughts before I finished for you all...
Where This Idea Came From...
The idea is that each week all of us book bloggers can write a post where we talk about the book or books we are reading for the week - and yes if you are still reading the same book for a few weeks in a row that is totally fine. Just be sure to include the answers to the five questions for What are you reading Wednesday in your post. Then hop over to one of the host sites and share your link!Of course, this will be even more fun if you leave the host a comment, and then jump around to another post or two, or five, and gush with them!
We cannot wait to see what you are reading.
What Are You Reading Wednesday - the nitty-gritty
Share the book/s you are reading with their author, maybe even the cover... and then answer these questions for at least one of them.
- Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
- Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
- Will you finish this one?
- Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, TV shows...)
- What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)

The Falconer by Elizabeth May
She's a stunner.
Edinburgh, 1844. Eighteen-year-old Lady Aileana Kameron, the only daughter of the Marquess of Douglas, has everything a girl could dream of: brains, charm, wealth, a title—and drop-dead beauty.
She's a liar.
But Aileana only looks the part of an aristocratic young lady. she's leading a double life: She has a rare ability to sense the sìthíchean—the faery race obsessed with slaughtering humans—and, with the aid of a mysterious mentor, has spent the year since her mother died learning how to kill them.
She's a murderer.
Now Aileana is dedicated to slaying the fae before they take innocent lives. With her knack for inventing ingenious tools and weapons—from flying machines to detonators to lightning pistols—ruthless Aileana has one goal: Destroy the faery who destroyed her mother.
She's a Falconer.
The last in a line of female warriors born with a gift for hunting and killing the fae, Aileana is the sole hope of preventing a powerful faery population from massacring all of humanity. Suddenly, her quest is a lot more complicated. She still longs to avenge her mother's murder—but she'll have to save the world first.
The first volume of a trilogy from an exciting new voice in young adult fantasy, this electrifying thriller combines romance and action, steampunk technology and Scottish lore in a deliciously addictive read.
Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
Total recommendation. Once you find some good book buddies, their book recommendations are priceless. They help push you into new genres, and honestly, some of my favorite books come from their recommendations.
Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
Derrick might be the best character in the whole book. There are few interesting characters, yet Derrick's witty antics are always entertaining, and he has a heart of gold, wich is always a bonus for a "side-kick" like character.
Will you finish this one?
Oh yes... as soon as I'm done with this, I'm picking it back up... I'll stay up late too.
Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, TV shows...)
For the most part, this is a very unique book for me. But I do think if you are a fan of any faery stories you will enjoy this one, or if you watched Buffy you'll probably appreciate Aileana because she has some serious spunk, yet she is complex and interesting.
What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)
Action packed... I was hooked from the beginning and as much as life allowed I read this. It was so good. I will have to move to the second book soon.

I believe this is a trilogy... and I feel that I need to stop picking up trilogies until I finish the ones I've already started, but I can't help it. Trilogies and series fill up the fantasy and YA world anymore.
