Ten of My Top Reads in 2017
December is halfway over... how did that happen?
Well to be honest, it's been a crazy year... so many changes in the world, in my country... my own home has seen many changes between school, work, and life... so I guess I'm not actually surprised.
I have said many times in the past that reading is a stress-relief for me. While some zone out with random shows, drinks, or parties, I read. Books give answers to questions life brings up all the time, and allows the brain to explore different avenues on the what ifs, and maybes of those questions. And that processing helps me to de-stress in the midst of the chaos of life every day.
And this year I have read more than 100 books - I'm thinking it has to do with all the changes... but as a result I have so many favorites... new authors for me, new characters I miss now that their stories are over. So I am going to do my best to limit my favorites...
Without further ado, my top ten (or so) favorite reads of 2017 (these were not all published this year, but I read them for the first time this year...)
Top 10 Favorites Read in 2017
- A Court of Thorns & Roses trilogy by Sarah J Maas - I loved the characters of these books, plus I realized I truly enjoy the style of writing Mass uses. She has been a fun author to discover this year.
- Daughter of Smoke & Bones trilogy by Laini Taylor - Another author I came across this year and loved these stories. Her writing is full of magic and imagery that pulls the reader into a world that is different, yet the same, it's wonderful.
- Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham - Non-fiction and me were not great mixes this year, but this book... I read the print and the audio. And I loved them both! Lauren narrated the audio, which made it so worth listening to.
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - I picked this one up for a weekend trip, to listen to on audio, mostly because its my husband's kind of story... but I adored every single second of this. It was like a fan fiction story for all those who grew up in the 80s & 90s.
- Defiance trilogy by CJ Redwine - One of my lovely bookish buddies suggested, maybe begged is a better word, me to read this one, so I picked them up on a whim... and fell in love. The epic adventure Rachel finds herself taking whisked me away right away, and I was heartbroken when it ended... but in a good way...
- A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab - This was a buddy read, and I loved it. I know there are two more books, but this one ends fairly cleanly, so I haven't moved on as there are so many books I want to read, but I will finish up this series in 2018 for sure.
- Hunted by Meagan Spooner - I picked this up simply because I am the biggest fan of all takes of Beauty and the Beast... and this was spectacular. It was completely different than any other version I've read, and I've read a ton, and I loved it.
- The Illuminae Files (book one & two) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff - I picked these up because a trusted book lover said she thought I'd love them... especially when I was looking for some more audio book ideas for the hours I spend in the car.... and she was right, these are spectacular. I'm not usually a big science fiction fan, but these are too good, and the audio are amazing - seriously you all need to try these.
- The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning - I didn't do many studies this year, I needed a break and my schedule shifted so it was hard to make them work. But this was the last one I did early in the year, and I still remember it. For anyone who has felt burned by the church, but believes there is a better way to believe... this book might surprise you...
- Gilded Cage by Vic James - My first ARC of 2017, it was a total random pick for me in 2016, and it started slow, but the adventure it took the reader on was so amazing... I cannot wait to read more of this story in 2018.
Alright so technically that is 17 books... but... oh well...

Illuminae would definitely land on my top ten 2017 list, as well. It surpassed my expectations, only because giant sci-fi novels tend to scare me. But there was so much hype surrounding that one, I knew I had to give it a shot. I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone last year but haven't gotten around to picking up the sequels yet. I'm looking forward to it, though!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by Illuminae too... in a very good way.
DeleteAnd yes finish up DoSaB because it's such a sweet adventure
