Buddy Reading & What Are You Reading Wednesday
Let's talk buddy reading.
Yesterday I talked about how much I love being on bookstagram - and one of the top reasons is that there are always people to buddy read with.
I know there are local groups that lead great book clubs, but for me, they never read books I'm interested, or the people are way too young (like high school) or way too old (I mean great-grandparent range). And while I don't mind either group as a section of the group, I don't want to be the only millennial in the bunch. Enter Bookstagram!
This year has been full of buddy reads on books I picked, and books I didn't pick, and books that have been sitting on my TBR since they were released. It's been amazing.
When you buddy read a book you get to see it in a new light while reading it from your perspective. It's like a college discussion class without any stress or tests! Now, I know the question is, How does one get such fabulous buddy readers?
It is easier than you think, yet the hardest thing for us introverted bibliophiles to hear - you ask someone to buddy read with you.
I know that's like torture.... but remember behind all those staged photos, that have probably been edited and perfected, is another regular person who simply loves books. When you see someone mentioned they got a new book haul, and a book you have is in their haul, shoot them a message and see if they want to buddy read. And if they say yes, be proactive enough to say, "great, let's start next week." Be specific about when you want to start and how often you'll "check in". If you mesh well, try another book when you're done. If you don't, no hard feelings. (Maybe I should do a whole post on this... hmm....)
Where this idea came from...
After months of building friendships with so many bibliophiles on Instagram, a few of my booksta-besties and I have decided to start a weekly meme where we can all gush over what we are reading for the week.
The idea is that each week all of us book bloggers can write a post where we talk about the book or books we are reading for the week - and yes if you are still reading the same book for a few weeks in a row that is totally fine. Just be sure to include the answers to the five questions for What are you reading Wednesday in your post. Then hop over to one of the host sites and share your link!
Of course, this will be even more fun if you leave the host a comment, and then jump around to another post or two, or five, and gush with them!
We cannot wait to see what you are reading.
What Are You Reading Wednesday - the nitty-gritty
Share the book/s you are reading with their author, maybe even the cover... and then answer these questions for at least one of them.
- Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
- Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
- Will you finish this one?
- Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, tv shows...)
- What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)
Marissa's Current Reads
I finished some books this past week!!! So here's my new Current Reads list:
- The Rose & the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh
- Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor
- The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso
And...
City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare
In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.
Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.
The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?
When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...
Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!
Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
I have been buddy reading the entire Shadowhunters world my amazing friend Sasha (find her on Instagram @faerydaebreena - you'll love her) and this is where we are at. And to be honest, by this point in the series (book six of the Mortal Instruments, there are so many more...) it wouldn't matter what the cover was because I am hooked.
Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
In the last book, City of Lost Souls, I loved Iz - but she hasn't been in this one too much, which is a bummer. I know I should say Clary or Jace... but to be honest Clary is predictable, and Jace has not been as central (in that he isn't talking much...) so for this specific book... umm... I don't think I have one! I just love the story...
Will you finish this one?
You can bet your bottom dollar! And I have to get moving to the Infernal Devices so that I'm ready for the next installment of The Dark Artifices... there is a plus to reading series that are not brand new... no real waiting for next editions...
Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, tv shows...)
Well, this unfair because it's such a big deal now it's become its own... but if you haven't picked up these books, and you enjoy epic fantasy with tons of modern reality thrown in, add these to your list. Granted if you've seen the movie or TV show, you need to pick up the book too...
What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)
This one started off quickly, and new... there are new characters introduced, and while the evil is still the same, it's been interesting. It is very long, which means, for me, there are giant sections of chapters that drag. I know she is setting up the final battle scenes but still, I wish she would get there faster! It's hard to read such giant books while doing the responsible stuff.Co-hosts to check out
Share your link & check out some friends current reads
I am going to try to focus on my current list for the rest of the year... I'll probably do some rereads on audio, and of course I'll be moving forward with this buddy reading series.... but I like to start the new year fresh so here's hoping I find a ton of time to read...
Leave a message with your current read, and tell me your thoughts on it. Or better yet join in the fun and make your own post!!! If you link up, let me know! I stop by all those who link up and chat for a bit.
On the off chance you wanted to add one of my current reads to your home library, here are my affiliate links... and that means that if you click on this, and then buy something on Amazon, I get a tiny bit of that sales. But it doesn't cost you any extra!
