Wife after God: A book review
I have heard it said that all marriages are moving in one of two directions - either they are spiraling upward or they are spiraling downward. Marriage doesn't really just stand stagnant. As I would not really consider myself an expert on marriage, I cannot say for sure if this is true, but when I look at the marriages around me, including my own, I would agree that concept. Either we make a conscious effort to work our marriages, or we start to feel the pressures that can make a marriage crumble.
When I saw that Jennifer from Unveiled Wife was putting out a devotional, I knew I wanted to review. Partly because the devotional was coming out right at the beginning of the year, a time when I tend to over do it with devotionals, but also because I enjoy reading Jennifer's blog posts. Luckily I was able to receive a copy for review, and overall I think this is a great devotional for all wives to read and follow.
Jennifer opens her devotional with a letter to the read, and a beautiful prayer. But it was what she said in the introduction that convinced me to follow through with this particular devotional.
"As a Christian and as a wife there is a responsibility to nurture both your relationship with God and your husband. Failure to passionately pursue these relationships will result in isolation."
I mean, how could you not at least make an effort to follow through with this after reading that? Right?
This devotional pushes to really get active, it's not just a read a few lines, say a silent prayer and move on with your day. You are encouraged to do something every day, both with your relationship with God and with your husband. So if you are ready to be pushed and challenged, think about this one!
Each day starts with a focused scripture verse or two. You will have to pull out your Bible and look them up though - action number one! Then Jennifer shares her thoughts on how those verses impact our lives, our relationships. This is followed by a short closing prayer. And in essence that is the end of the devotional, if you want it to be. But there are action steps that follow every day.
- A daily challenge - Jennifer has included a challenge for every day's devotional. They range from simply talking to your husband to make future plans and figuring out how to take steps to set them in motion. This is a part of the devotional that you could spend all day on if you wanted to.
- Status update - each day includes a tweetable line to share with the @unveiledwife, #wifeafterGod community. This allows you to see who else is making this journey with you, and even seek encouragement to follow through, if you start to struggle. It's truly a unique aspect to this devotional that I think many wives today will love.
- Journal questions - finally there are three questions for you to answer. These questions can take some thought and time, as you often have to really consider how you feel and what you want.
What are your thoughts on how marriage spirals? Do you feel like a marriage can truly just stand still if you put nothing into it? Does a daily devotional strictly for your marriage sound like something you would do? Join the conversation, I'd love to hear from you.
