Walking By Faith - A Book Review

Last year I signed up for a large group Bible study in an effort to get my kids out of the house on a regular basis in preparation for preschool.  You see, while I was in my Bible study, by kiddos where in a short "preschool" like class with kids their own ages, where they learned a Bible story, did a craft, went to the church library, sang worship songs and got to play in a large gym.

Little did I know that the study I signed up for would be such a great study!  You see, I found myself in a group of moms studying Walking by Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark by Jennifer Rothschild.  And let me tell you, if you want a short study that will open your eyes this is it.

Walking by Faith - a book review  {Reading List}

This is a six week study that features Rothschild in a weekly video and then consists of five days of homework. I'd say the homework would take about 15-20 minutes a day to complete. However, there is bonus material each week that includes further scripture verses if you want to dig in deeper, and that would add about 15-40 minutes of work, depending. Even though you are spending time in your actual Bible, most of the work is already in the workbook, so this is an easier study for super busy moms and women.

This study shows off how Rothschild found herself desperate to see after loosing her sight and how that desperation, slowly, strengthened her relationship  with God, but only as she allowed Him to strengthen her while she stopped depending on the world around her. And she challenges everyone in the study to try the same thing (not going blind, but letting go of what you actually see in the world around and depending on God instead).

Some major topics covered in this study include:

  • setting a pace for your days and letting go of fear and the feelings that keep you from moving forward with that pace
  • learning to rely fully on God, not own your own abilities
  • responding with gratitude to all of the events and challenges that God hands to you
  • building endurance
  • dealing with stumbling blocks
  • clinging to God's word and his promises
Granted the subjects covered  might not be earth-shatteringly new, but Rothschild's perspective made this study worth it.  She made it powerful and real in a way not many people can.  If you have never heard Rothschild speak, take a moment and watch the video below (if you are reading in your inbox, click over).

I believe this would be a wonderful study for mothers, women of all ages, new believers and those believers who are longing for a stronger relationship with God.  If you are looking for a study to do with a group (big or small) consider this one - just remember, there is a weekly video that is a must for this study.
