Spend five minutes today and write - don't worry about what others might think as you write, just do it! You'll feel better!

So even as I read the prompt - Wide - my thoughts were consumed with so many emotions I didn't really know how to start. I mean wide should be like an ocean description, or a grassy field or something... at least that is my first image...
Yet the idea of writing for five minutes on Wide just wasn't happening in my head. and the deal is that we don't think too much about what we are going to write, right?
So I sat down to write.
Then the baby cried - 5 minutes on hold.
It is amazing how the feelings in life can be so wide, so encompassing. We, as responsible adults, know that we should not be rule by our emotions. That such behavior is childish.
And yet emotions become that wide, large part of our thoughts and words all day, every day.
Sure there are great emotions to get lost in - love, joy, hope.
And even the less fun ones have a purpose. I mean a fear of some spiders or poisonous snakes could safe lives!
Yet we know that any emotion that takes over all our thoughts and actions is not healthy. There needs to be a balance. And finding that balance is the hidden secret I think most people search their whole lives for.
What if that secret is right in front of us?
What if we are making the worse decision when we grit our teeth and just try harder?
What if the wide open arms of a Savior, standing silently beside us is that secret?

All the way through school there were many assignments that teachers gave that I dreaded - any thing that involved standing up and speaking in front of the class was torture (to stand in front of the whole school for some things was unthinkable!). There was always one assignment though that I loved - I looked forward to it. The free writing assignments. You know the ones where you got to write anything you wanted. You could make up a story, characters, setting - the whole thing was in your control.
I realize not everyone loved that assignment.
For some, the moment the art supplies came out was pure freedom - the ability to create thrilled some (not me... but I know those who loved them).
Why do we, as people, have such desire to create? Why?

Children's Corner
With school now in full swing for so many, I keep hearing parents lamenting how their kids simply have no desire to read, or write for that matter. They discuss how their kids simply want to watch movies and cartoons, or play video games. Granted some say how their kids would rather be outside playing, and hey, I'm all for the outside time. But let's be honest, there takes a level of intentionality when it comes to raising children who do want to read and write.
That purpose and focus on raising kids who love books starts young. Take the time to really look through some books, at your library or local bookstore, and find books that will engage your youngest kids. Really as soon as kids can sit in your lap, they can start to listen to books as you read to them. Find books that engage them. Books where you can help them touch the pictures and feel textures, books that have flaps... or books that allow them to trace!
The Motion Adds
There is something amazing that happens when we physically write something with our hands. The act of writing connects so many different parts of our brains that we are able to remember it more clearly. So when it comes to teaching how to write, teachers (moms are always teachers!) often put out copy work for kids to trace in order to learn. The question is, what about those younger kids who aren't really holding writing tools well, or at all, yet? Do we have to wait?
Of course not!
We started our journey of writing with our youngest, with tracing in this super fun book, P is for Princess. Yes, very girly, but she loves it! Each page is full of colorful images, and tons of flaps to flip over and learn new words for the letter of the page.
The reason why I love it?
Each page has a letter, and that letter is indented, so I can gently guide her finger through the letter. My boys even even enjoy how specific the traceable letters are because there are numbered lines in the letters that tell you the order of the steps.
This is the kind of book that you could spend hours on with your kids. Even better, they could spend hours with this book while you get something else done.
The Options (well some of them)
While I'll admit, I was shocked that there aren't a million of these books out there, then again maybe I'm not searching correctly, I have discovered some fun options in books.
- Disney Princess P Is for Princess
**
- A Is for Apple (Trace-and-Flip Fun!) (Smart Kids Trace-and-Flip)
**
- 1 2 3 Count with Me (Trace-and-Flip Fun!) **
- Wipe Clean
- Wipe Clean: Numbers (Wipe Clean Learning Books)
**
- Letters
- First Words
Of course the internet is a great resource, because there are a ton of fun printables you could use to practice tracing as well. We often print these out then place them in clear sheet protectors and use erasable markers to practice. Of course the finger tracing method is always an option for the younger kids.
Have you taught your kid through tracing? What is your go to traceable practice?

Linking up with these great hops:

I've got the privilege to share with you another fun book this season. I'm very excited, as this was a surprise read for me. I didn't expect it from a self-published writer, but still I enjoyed every second of the book. At the very end of the post I've included my personal favorite excerpt from the book to give you a sneak peak. I know there are a million books out there to fill your time with, and you must be selective. But if you are looking for a fun read that will pull you into a new world, this should be one you add to your list!
And don't miss the giveaway at near the end - I mean who couldn't use a $25 gift card for Amazon this close to the holidays? I know right!
5 Wonderfully Interactive Books for Toddlers
Guess Who Books on Children's Corner
There is no doubt that toddlers have short attention spans. When it comes to reading with your toddler, you might have to grab a stack of 10 different board books in order to keep them sitting with you for even fifteen minutes. That's fine, but one of my secrets of getting my toddlers to sit with me for 15-30 of reading time are these fun Guess Who books. We can spend 15 minutes on just one of them.
Granted these are really just life-the-flap books - and there are so many of those out there. Yet somehow, these fun books have the right amount of text per page to keep a toddler interested... and the famous characters probably help too!
About the Book
Most of the Guess Who books have a theme that can be used for any homeschooling lesson, or interest your child has at the time: Sea Animals, Farm Animals, Sofia the First, Elmo... Each page has one lift-the-flap feature that is hinted at with a simple four line rhyme and then a question. Many have a fun pop-out at the end of all the animals, characters that were found through the pages. It is fun to review the names of the animals at the end and point to each one.
Why We Like It
I'll be honest, my daughter probably likes these books so much because of the familiar characters in many of them. As the third child, she knows way more characters than the older two did at her age, and you know I refuse to feel bad about that. I see it as a way to help build her stamina with sitting and reading.
Granted, there are also some super fun Guess Who books with animals that have no real connection to famous characters. These are equally fun.
We are enjoying these books as a family because there are so many wonderful resources to make your own lift-the-flap book. My oldest can make up his own stories. Both boys enjoy using beginning, middle, end flaps to help retell stories they know. The possibilities are endless!

5 wonderfully interactive books for toddlers & big kids. #books @Reading_List1
Here are some wonderful printables and tutorials to make your own lift-the-flap books!
- This is a fun Jesus flip-book idea - have your kiddos color each section, then write a verse or word for them to learn during the week.
- Who doesn't love the Very Hungry Catepillar? This one is a wonderful tool to help with reading comprehension, as your kids will write down a beginning, middle and end of the story in the flaps.
- There is a fun idea of a "quote kite" where you can have your older kids put in their favorite quote on each section of a little kite, or for younger readers, pick some new readers, then list new words for them to find... be creative with this one!
- While FlapperBooks are a little pricey, these books allow you to pick pictures of your family to be inserted into a life-the-flap book... maybe a fun keepsake from a family vacation?
- This is a generic flip-book where your kiddos get to write down the who, what, where, when & why of any book you are reading.
How many lift-the-flap books do you own? Are they a favorite for you kiddos? Which one specifically do they love?

Somehow I found the time to write for five minutes today - I've missed it recently.
Here's to another Friday - have to admit I don't quite see them the same now that I am SAHM, but still weekends are always fun. And another day to just write, why not? Topic of the week: Identity (Thanks Gypsy Mama). So here goes:
Identity
Knowing who I am has been a process. And I am many things, a mom, a wife, a college-degree holder, a friend, the list can go on and on. Mostly, right now, in this moment, I'm feeling like the adopted daughter I am.
Now some are probably ready to hear about my Christan faith right now, and yes that is who I am. But I am adopted.
I have a birth mom, and an adopted mom.
And as Mother's Day approaches I'm reminded of both of my moms.
I feel grateful to my birth mom, for taking care of me for those months as God wove me together. I am grateful she was wise enough to give me to my parents.
My identity is strongly tied to the fact that I have the parents I have. The mom I have.
I was placed into a particular family so that I would be the person God wanted me to be, and I couldn't be happier about such a path. My identity has become interlaced with a large, loud Italian family. That family is a great identity to have.
Sure there are moments of wondering over what it would have been like if, but "if" didn't happen. This did. And I am fitting in just perfectly still to this day, as I am part of my own littler family. That original family has prepared me, and stands next to me now, reminding me of who I am.
This song came to mind while I was writing so I hope you enjoy

Wanna join in the fun? Have five minutes to write - just write, no editing, no research, no hard thinking. Let the words flow- it's fun!!
Head over to Gypsy Mama, and join the party! Oh and tell me about it so I can party with you.

I remember when summer was full of endless days that I got to fill however I wanted... do you remember those days?
I would fill them with my own imaginings - some times alone, other times I would imagine with friends, and then we would create, usually with words, that world or event we had imagined.
But where do we learn that art of imagining? Are we born with it? Why do some people seem to day dream and imagine while others don't?
I'm not sure it's wrong to day dream and imagine. In fact I'm sure it's part of the process of all successful people (financially or not...).

I am not sure I will ever be the mom who homeschools her kids, although I do agree that all moms need to take on the responsibility of overseeing the education of their kids. And let's be honest, to truly do this... well the answer is homeschooling... yes I am still trying to reconcile these points in my brain. So while I figure out how that will work for my family, I spend time reading how other mommies are teaching, training and educating their littles. One of my favorite sources is Keri, who write at Growing in His Glory.
Keri has graciously agreed to share some of her favorite resources with us today! I hope you enjoy her tips as much as I do. Please leave her a comment once you finish soaking in all this wisdom.

I blog because I've loved to write for decades. I was writing stories with my friends as a young child. Creative writing assignments were my favorite in school. And that is why whenever I can I stop by Lisa-Jo's Five Minute Friday community on Fridays. She shares a single word, and a ton of us write what comes to mind for five minutes. That's it. And it is fun!
Want to join our favorite free writing exercise of the week? It’s easy peasy:
1. Write for 5 minutes flat on the prompt: “Story” with no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

Story
Stories fill my days. Stories to read to my boys about cars and far-away places. Stories to read online about the world. Stories I dream up. They are everywhere.
And yet it is so easy to miss the story of life - isn't it?
I mean we are living story every day, even if for the most part it is a repeat of the previous day (you know same chores, same schedule). It is the story of our lives that makes it life, right?
Shouldn't we be trying to make the story count? At least a little. Make it a goal to do one thing each day to make the story worth reading. What one thing can I do today? Did I do yesterday? Will I do tomorrow?
Maybe it's digging out a puzzle I know my oldest loves and spending 15 minutes with him while we put it together.
Maybe it's making some cookies just for fun, even if the clean up seems daunting in the end.
Maybe it's just going out side and seeing what happens - kids are great at coming up with ways to fill the stories and make them interesting, it's us parents and grown-ups that have place restrictions on our stories.
So at least for 15 minutes a day, I will forget about my restrictions on my story and focus on letting life write freestyle in my book.
There are so many times when I'm reading a main-stream book and I see the power of God in them, even though the author didn't mean to write it in. Of course this happens often with movies too! I've decided it's because the Creator designed us with His truth ingrained in our hearts, and when we, as people, try to express our feelings in creating, that Truth finds it's way into our creation.
Do you know what I mean?
With this concept in the back of my mind, I was thrilled when I got my hands on Kristen Parrish's new devotional, No Cape Required: 52 Ways to Unleash Your Inner Hero.
This is an amazing little book, especially for the modern Christian who enjoys watching and reading secular media. Parrish has complied a list of 52 well known fictional characters and while discussing their main hero-attribute points Christians to the truth of God wanting us to cultivate similar attributes.
After stumbling across The Gypsy Mama today I knew that spending five minutes of my Friday to just write was a perfect idea. Obviously I love writing (why else would I have two blogs?); and an excuse to just write, no editing, or fear of judgment, sounds good to me. So here's to Five Minute Fridays.
Community
GO
Community for me is support.
Not always physical support, or even vocal support. But that presence that comes with being around other people who know you well enough that words aren't needed. Just being is enough.
That way as the words flow you don't feel concerned, or judged. Just supported.
Although I've grown up in the same area I live in now, I'm just starting to really build up a close community of peers that are in the same life stages as me and my immediate family. It is a process.
Community doesn't just happen. You have to work at it. You have to make the decision to grow relationships with certain people, and be around them, physically, on a regular basis. Sometimes that means being silent and listening to them, other times that means you get to pour out all your thoughts (well within reason of course).
There is something about this process that strengthens us. That process is community.
And to think that after all the work at building your community, they are there for you. You are there for them. What joy that brings.
I can't wait until I'm so close to this new community that I can see them as the people I turn to, and know that they will turn to me. Blessings.
