Sleeping Beauty Steampunk Style... WAYRW
Let's talk summer romance novels...
Don't you think the genre is more read in the summer?
Maybe it's all the time spent poolside or something, but somehow, even after talking with some of you on Instagram, it seems we are more likely to pick up a romance (and I'm talking clean love stories here...) during the summer months...
So I figured reading the upcoming Kiss of the Spindle would be a great start to my summer reads... and this book is certainly in the romance category... (again, we are not talking the scandalous romance novel here...)
Where This Idea Came From...
The idea is that each week all of us book bloggers can write a post where we talk about the book or books we are reading for the week - and yes if you are still reading the same book for a few weeks in a row that is totally fine. Just be sure to include the answers to the five questions for What are you reading Wednesday in your post. Then hop over to one of the host sites and share your link!Of course, this will be even more fun if you leave the host a comment, and then jump around to another post or two, or five, and gush with them!
We cannot wait to see what you are reading.
What Are You Reading Wednesday - the nitty-gritty
Share the book/s you are reading with their author, maybe even the cover... and then answer these questions for at least one of them.
- Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
- Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
- Will you finish this one?
- Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, TV shows...)
- What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)

Kiss of the Spindle by Nancy Campbell Allen
Doctor Isla Cooper is cursed. Literally. Each night, at the stroke of midnight she falls into a death-like sleep from which she cannot be awakened for six hours. To make it worse, the curse has an expiration date—after a year, it becomes permanent. And the year is almost up.
In a desperate attempt to find Malette—the witch who cursed her—Isla blackmails her way onto Daniel Pickett's private airship bound for the Caribbean, only to discover she's traveling with three illegal shapeshifters and the despicable Nigel Crowe, a government official determined to hunt down and exterminate every shapeshifter in England. Isla and Daniel must work together to keep the identities of the shapeshifters hidden while coming to terms with their own hidden secrets, and their blossoming attraction to each other.
Filled with suspense, intrigue, and plenty of romance, Kiss of the Spindle is steampunk Sleeping Beauty story. It is a race against the clock as Isla and Daniel try to hunt down the elusive Malette before Isla's death-like sleep becomes permanent.
Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
Content - I read Allen's Beauty and the Clockwork Beast a while back and loved it... I was surprised because it wasn't what I expected, but her writing was fun, and I enjoy her take on the Steampunk/clockwork genre - so far this book is living up to that expectation.
Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
There are few great characters in this story for sure. Dr. Cooper is not your typical damsel in distress... and yet, she does have quite a bit of distress she needs to be saved from... and Captain Pickett is shaping up to be complex Prince of the story, to say the least. I'm enjoying all the side characters that are passengers on Pickett's airship - but I can't say too much about them without blowing part of the twist of the book...
Will you finish this one?
I certainly will! It's a fun adventure of a story with the typical fairy tale reimagining I adore.
Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, TV shows...)
Of course, I'm reminded of all the clockwork style books I've read, but mostly I'm enjoying the voice that is clearly Allen - she has a good handle on this genre it seems, I hope she writes more of these.
What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)
Slow build, for the action, but the suspense of it is great. Not to mention this book falls more into the slow simmer for the love story too...
