The Tethered Mage - A New Dystopian Current Read...
A new month is here! Anyone else excited?
This is my favorite time of the year. The promise of family filled holiday traditions keep me active and going while the weather turns colder. It's the only time of year I'm okay with snow and shivering...
And it is also National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which fills up hours and hours of my November- so you know you'll find me with my laptop more often than a book. That doesn't mean I'm not reading!
The idea is that each week all of us book bloggers can write a post where we talk about the book or books we are reading for the week - and yes if you are still reading the same book for a few weeks in a row that is totally fine. Just be sure to include the answers to the five questions for What are you reading Wednesday in your post. Then hop over to one of the host sites and share your link!
Of course, this will be even more fun if you leave the host a comment, and then jump around to another post or two, or five, and gush with them!
We cannot wait to see what you are reading.
What Are You Reading Wednesday - the nitty-gritty
Share the book/s you are reading with their author, maybe even the cover... and then answer these questions for at least one of them.
- Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content?
- Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
- Will you finish this one?
- Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, tv shows...)
- What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...)

I'm listening to The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater and almost done with City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare, but for this post I'm gonna talk about The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso.
The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso
In the Raverran Empire, magic is scarce and those born with power are strictly controlled -- taken as children and conscripted into the Falcon Army.
Zaira has lived her life on the streets to avoid this fate, hiding her mage-mark and thieving to survive. But hers is a rare and dangerous magic, one that threatens the entire empire.
Lady Amalia Cornaro was never meant to be a Falconer. Heiress and scholar, she was born into a treacherous world of political machinations.
But fate has bound the heir and the mage. And as war looms on the horizon, a single spark could turn their city into a pyre
- Why did you decide to pick up this book - cover or content? This was mostly a cover "buy" - I mean look that that fading image of a woman in the bird... and the hints of fire... it reminded me of the feel of The Hunger Games... you do know I have a weakness for Dystopian stories, right?
- Who is your favorite character so far, and why? I feel like I should say Zaira because she is a spitfire... but honestly, Amalia is more interesting to me. Which is probably good as most of the story comes from her pov. Amalia is torn between her mother's desires, the expectations of the rise of power, the doge who commands the power... and of course her own will. It's setting up quite a complicated character - then again it's very early in the book for me - only about a quarter in.
- Will you finish this one? I plan to at this point. It's interesting, and I want to know what happens with the battle of power that is imminent. Then again this is the first in the series, so I hope there are some answers in this book at least.
- Finish the sentence: This book reminds me of... (other books, movies, tv shows...) The synopsis reminded me of The Hunger Games and most of those Dystopian stories... as I read I still feel those are the most similar. I hope it lives up to my high expectations.
- What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,...) So far it's interesting. I want to know more. The build up for the world is taking a while - granted there is a lot to set up, so I get it. And Melissa Caruso is doing a fair enough of job of mixing in the set up with the build up of action... but I'm quarter of the way in and want more to actually be happening...

Since we are chatting about what we are reading - I want to take a moment and chat about yearly reading challenges. Goodreads is totally my counter for books I enjoy seeing everyone else's reviews and thoughts on books, plus it's fun to set goals and celebrating reaching them. Are you on Goodreads?
